Telecom Liechtenstein will launch 25 Gigabit per second symmetric fiber internet nationwide on December 9. The Principality claims to become the first country offering such speeds to every household and business. The deployment uses Nokia’s 25G-PON technology on existing infrastructure. This passive optical network standard delivers actual speeds of 18 Gbps by upgrading current equipment without laying new cables. Nokia has already shipped over one million 25G-PON ready ports globally, with more than 150 networks prepared for activation.
Switzerland runs a bit behind its neighbor, as Init7 remains the only provider offering 25 Gbps to consumers, but it is limited to its partners. Major operators like Swisscom, Salt, and Sunrise cap residential speeds at 10 Gbps.Regarding the adoption of fiber internet connections, in Switzerland again, the fiber subscription penetration stands at 35.2% of broadband connections, which is below the OECD average of 46.9%. Nevertheless, Swisscom targets full fiber coverage by 2035, investing 1.7 billion francs annually. Yet at year-end 2022, 47% of Swiss connections still relied on aging copper infrastructure. Now, the challenge remains in finding applications requiring such bandwidth. Today, households rarely needs that high bandwidth. On the other hand, industries and enterprises will probably benefit from this technology, especially in the area of AI (because of the data intensive use of these applications), high-resolution video transfers, or real-time communication.
