Venant juste de terminer l’impl??mentation d’une application utilisant la technologies UDDI, de plus, en d??fendant cet outil, voil?? que Microsoft, IBM et SAP annoncent l’arr??t des UBR (pour UDDI Business Registry). Pour ceux qui ne sont pas familiers avec ces termes, les UBR ??taient des services UDDI mis ?? la disposition de tout un chacun, quant ?? UDDI, il s’agit d’un service de pages blanches pour les services web.

Le projet a d??marr?? en septembre 2000 et a donn?? lieu ?? 3 version successives de UDDI, sp??cification qui a ??t?? reprise par le consortium OASIS. D’apr??s ce qu’on peut lire sur l’UBR de Microsoft, il s’agissait d’un test grandeur nature afin de v??rifier que l’int??rop??rabilit?? entre des impl??mentations diff??rentes d’une m??me sp??cification fonctionne. Exp??rience faite, et travaillant avec des services web depuis quelques ann??es, force m’a ??t?? de constater que UDDI n’a pas vraiment convaincu beaucoup de monde. Et l’arriv??e de la version 3 des sp??cifications n’a d’ailleurs pas fait beucoup de vague. De plus, ?? voir l’activit?? des newsgroup sur le sujet, cela n’est gu??re convaincant.

Dommage, car il s’agissait d’une technologie int??ressante, mais je crains qu’elle ne soit encore plus confidentielle avec les fermetures de ces UBR.

Finishing an application using the UDDI technologies, and more, defending this useful tool, Microsoft, IBM and SAP announce the discontinuation of the UBR (read UDDI Business Registry). For those who don’t know what are these acronyms, UBR were UDDI public services for all of us. And UDDI is a kind of yellow pages for web services.

The UDDI project started in september 2000 and 3 different versions of the specification went out. These specifications were also approved by the OASIS consortium. As we can read on the Microsoft’s UBR, “the goals were to define a set of specifications to enable”……”and to prove interoperability through a shared implementation of those specifications…”. Still working with web services for several years, I have never seen much of enthusiasm about UDDI and I don’t think many companies have adopted this technology. And the version 3 of the specifications coming out seems not changing very much of this. Moreover, the activity on the UDDI newsgroups is very little.

That is a pity, because it was (is) an interesting technology, but I am afraid it will become even more confidential with the UBR shutdown.
